Introduction of AFFINITY Designer for my students – as an alternative to Adobe Illustrator!

NEWS: I’m teaching AFFINITY Designer at DIGICOMP SWITZERLAND

Affinity Designer (a vector art & design package) was launched in 2014 for macOS. It was Serif’s first product for macOS, and had been written from scratch specifically for it. This was followed in 2015 by the second Affinity product Affinity Photo (a photo editing & design package). Affinity Publisher was released in 2019.

NEWS: ich unterrichte neu AFFINITY Designer Kurs bei DIGICOMP SCHWEIZ

Im Oktober 2014 wurde die App Affinity Designer im Mac-App-Store veröffentlicht. Im Juni 2015 bekam Serif für die App den Apple Design Award verliehen. Im Juli 2015 begannen die Arbeiten an Affinity Photo. 2016 wurden beide Apps mit der Version 1.5 auch für Windows veröffentlicht. Am 19. Juni 2019 erschien die DTP-Software Affinity Publisher.

TIP OF THE WEEK: How to vectorize & colorize a photo!
In the Illustration below, Mike used manual illustration techniques combined with Adobe Photoshop & Illustrator.


Tutorial: How to use the image trace option in Illustrator CS6 or CC, to vectorize and colorize a Photo. Watch the tutorial in English and German subtitles below.
1: Place your photo into Illustrator.

2: Vectorise your photo under > Window > Image Trace.

3: Don’t forget to click on the button “EXPAND”.

4: Edit your colors under > Edit > Edit Colors.

1: Platziere ein Foto in Adobe Illustrator.

2: Vektorisiere dein Photo unter > Fenster > Bildnachzeichner.

3: Klicke auf “UMWANDELN” um die Vektorpunkte zu generieren.
4: Du kannst dein Vektorbild umfärben unter > Bearbeiten > Farben bearbeiten.

Photoshop Tip: I always have to scale the size of my images with Adobe Photoshop. Here I show the steps of my job; how to prepare my illustration at a 300 dpi resolution, 7 inches wide for Adobe InDesign. I go to MENU > IMAGE > IMAGE SIZE and follow this steps: How to reduce or enlarge a Photoshop file without loosing quality.

Hier zeige ich die Arbeitsschritte; wie ich meine Illustration auf 300 dpi ändere und als 15 cm breites Bild für Adobe InDesign vorbereite. TIP OF THE WEEK: How to draw with the new PENCIL TOOL in Adobe CC

It’s never been so easy to draw in Illustrator. Simply double-click the Pencil-Tool icon in your tool bar to adjust the Pencil Tool Options.

Next step: trace your drawing by using the new Pencil Tool. You’ll see how easy it flows with the right setting! You’re now even able to draw closed shapes.

Photoshop Tipp > BLENDING MODE: I love to use Blending Modes in my layers, as shown on my Illustration below. I first go under MENU > LAYERS > and select a different Blending Mode for the layer. With this method, I can apply different transparencies to my layers and work non-destructive.

Dazu gehe ich unter MENU > EBENEN > und stelle einen anderen Mischmodus für die Ebene ein. Mit dieser Methode arbeite ich nicht-Destruktiv, und kann somit jederzeit eine Transparenz löschen oder nach Wunsch verändern.

Photoshop Tipp > SMART FILTERS: When I’m using Filters as shown on my Illustration below, I first go under MENU > FILTER > Convert for Smart Filter. With this method, I can apply every filter and work non-destructive. I open my layers and click on my Filter icon which opens the previous chosen filter settings so I can make my adjustments.

Photoshop Tip > SMART FILTER: Wenn ich in Photoshop Filter benutze – siehe unten – dann gehe ich unter MENU > FILTER > Konvertieren für Smart Filter. Mit dieser Methode arbeite ich nicht-Destruktiv, und kann somit jeden Filter löschen oder nach Wunsch verändern. Dazu öffne ich mein Ebenen-Bedienfeld und klicke auf meinen Filter, damit sich der vorher gewählte Filter wieder öffnet und ich Änderungen vornehmen kann.

Tip 1: How to show the Photoshop channels in color!
Normally the channels in Photoshop are being shown in greyscale. In certain cases I prefer to see them in colors to make alterations. Click on the link for more info.

Tip 2: The difference between S-RGB and RGB in Adobe Photoshop
I will use sRGB for my own illustrations – you may see one below – if I’m certain that my artwork will only be for digital display. Please click on the link for more info.

Miriam worked in Zurich as a designer/illustrator in both full-time and freelance positions for advertising agencies such as Wirz BBDO and McCann Erickson. After that, she came to the United States to work for Disney on the new Disneyland Tokyo theme park designs. Miriam then went on to work with Cinesite/Kodak, the Hollywood special effects company, as staff illustrator/concept artist for various feature film projects.
